CBD 101
You’ve decided to purchase a CBD product - yippee! Now, to get the most out of your new purchase, it’s important that you use it correctly. To help you, we’ve put together a quick guide on how to use CBD effectively.
Heading #1: How to use hemp/CBD oil or tinctures
Most hemp and CBD products, such as CBD gummies and CBD capsules, are pretty easy to use. However, CBD oils or tinctures are a little more complicated. If you’re not familiar with using tinctures, this might be new territory to you.
To use a hemp or CBD oil/tinctures you have several options:
Orally
Sublingually
Food, Beverage or Mocktails
Topically
We find the most powerful way is to take CBD tinctures sublingually - that is, under the tongue - because it gives the CBD a chance to enter your bloodstream through the capillaries in your mouth. This makes the product more bioavailable (meaning that your body uses more of it, more effectively). It also means that your CBD gets to work faster.
To use an oil or tincture sublingually:
Decide on a dosage and figure out how much liquid you’ll need to take: A dropper full? Half a dropper full? Two droppers full?
Squeeze the desired amount under your tongue.
Hold it there for at least 60 seconds and then swallow.
It’s more than okay to swallow tinctures immediately or add it to your food or beverages - however it will take longer to work as it has to pass through your digestive system. It also tends to be less bioavailable if you take it this way.
Although... It can be a lot of fun to add oils/tinctures to your smoothie routine, food and beverage recipes, mocktails and more!
Let's also not forget the amazing benefits these oils can have for your skin: with pain relief, skin conditions, anti-aging and beyond.
Get creative, health can be an adventure!
Heading #2: When should I use hemp/CBD products?
It’s best to use CBD on a daily basis.
CBD itself can be used at any time of the day, but certain products are more suited to certain uses.
If you’re using a hemp or CBD product that has sleep-enhancing ingredients like CBN or melatonin, it’s obviously best to use that at night, while energizing CBD and CBG products are best used in the morning. Consult the product description for more information.
For best results, consider splitting your daily dosage up and having some in the morning, some in the afternoon, and some in the evening.
You might want an extra dose of CBD on days when you need extra support. If you’re feeling stressed, depleted, stiff, uncomfortable, or scatter-brained, a little more CBD might give you the boost you need.
Heading 3#: How much CBD should I use?
Many first-time CBD users are curious about dosage. Too little CBD might be unhelpful, while too much CBD can be a waste - obviously, you’ll want to use your products as economically as possible.
The general rule is to “start low and go slow”: start with a small amount of CBD and gradually increase the dose. You’ll find that 10mg or 15mg per day is a good starting point. If there’s a recommended dose, you could even start at half of that dose and work your way up.
Some CBD users enjoy using a journal to make a note of their dosage every day. They’ll record the dosage, the time they took it, as well as their mood and physical symptoms. Since CBD often has a gentle effect, you might not notice how effective it is until you compare it to how you felt before using it.
Lastly, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before using a CBD product (or any supplement or herbal preparation).
